Job Purpose: The Lead Project Engineer, Automotive Applications Engineer is responsible for the conception and delivery of all applications projects in the Automotive sector, taking Sunamp’s core products (Heat and Cold storage batteries) and translating them into market-attractive automotive systems. Projects may be led either by the requirements of a specific customer, or by internal research investment. Working alongside the Sales function, the role will be the technical and commercial interface within the automotive industry sector; working with the company’s Lead Technologist and Materials team, it will also interface with core technology development. This post will require excellent communication and presentation skills as well as engineering expertise.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

End-to-end delivery of the Automotive systems offering, including:

  • Working with the Global Automotive Business Manager to develop strategy, and introduce thermal energy storage technology to customers via visits, exhibitions, and conferences
  • Development and agreement of Commercial, Engineering and Customer design requirements
  • Specification of projects to deliver those requirements, and agreement with the customer and internal stakeholders
  • Recruitment, development and leadership, where required, of a small supporting Automotive Applications team
  • Execution and leadership of Automotive Applications projects by the team and using the support of the wider Sunamp organisation, Lead Technologist and materials specialists
  • Delivery to time, cost and quality targets, ensuring customer satisfaction

 

R&D Requirement Led specifications

These requirements come either from internal discussion or R&D programmes that have completed and have given rise to other R&D requirements. This will include:

  • Working with the Material team to look at using new materials and how they can be best encapsulated for the automotive use case
  • Working with the Global Automotive Business Manger to ensure the work is in line with his vision to approach the OEM and Tier 1
  • Specify, design and build the prototype to prepare for trial
  • Implement the design solution on a vehicle and test
  • Present solution to customer with Global Automotive Business Manager

Skill and Competency Requirements

Skill and competency requirements:

  • 5-10 years practical experience in innovative product development in the Automotive or other relevant sector
  • Experience of leadership of projects and teams
  • Experience of thermal, heat management or HVAC systems, preferably in the Automotive sector
  • Experience of niche vehicles or similar products
  • Understanding the value of thermal management and energy storage
  • Experience in Simulink/Matlab or similar computer modelling; CAD tools
  • Experience of managing rig or prototype based innovation development
  • Understanding and experience of new product introduction processes within the automotive sector
  • Ability to control time/cost/budget performance within each project – knowledge of project management tools is useful
  • Understanding of MS Office tools to support preparations for project meetings and customer presentations
  • Excellent teamworking skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others
  • Ability to work within health and safety regulation
  • Awareness of ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 and TS 16949 is useful
  • Experience of InnovateUK or similar grant-funded collaborative projects is useful

Education and additional Skills Required

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant area
  • Experience in a workshop environment
  • Understanding of chemistry preferable
